Cars and Options Only Sold for a Single Model Year in the United States

Year Model Notes
1981 Cadillac 368ci V8-6-4 engine The standard engine in all 1981 Cadillacs, the engine offered the first implementation of cylinder deactivation where the engine would automatically switch between 8, 6, and 4 cylinders. Unfortunately, the system proved troublesome and was dropped after a year.
1984 Chevrolet Corvette (L86 Small Block)
1987 Mercedes-Benz 190D 2.5 Turbo The optional 2.5L diesel in the 190-series was supplemented with a 2.5L turbodiesel for 1987. This engine was not available in California.
1990 Nissan Axxess Rebadged Nissan Prairie, only sold in the US for the 1990 model year, replacing the Nissan Stanza Wagon. Continued to be sold in Canada until the 1995 model year.
1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 442 W-41 Homologation special, 204 made. The W41 was a special engine, the 2.3L NA I4 made 190 horsepower and was paired with a 5-speed manual.
1992 Ford Crown Victoria No front grille. Front grille was added for 1993.

1993 Chrysler Lebaron Coupe 1993 was the last model year for the Lebaron Coupe, and for one year (1993) the coupe got a refreshed front fascia along with the convertible variant of the Lebaron, however, the coupe would be discontinued after the 1993 model year, leaving the sedan and convertible variants in the lineup.
1993 Volkswagen Eurovan Passenger Though the Eurovan was reintroduced for the 1999 model year in the United States, 1993 was the only year in which the pre-facelifted T4 Volkswagen Transporter was offered in the United States, which was not a conversion van. 1993 was also the only year you could get a passenger Eurovan with a manual transmission in the United States.
1995 BMW M3 S50 was replaced with the S52 engine in November of 1996.
1995 Saab 9000 CDE V6 The final model year of the 9000 CD series (sedan variant) and the first model year of the V6. You could only get the V6 with the sedan for the 1995 model year.

The Nubira hatchback was only sold in the US and was dropped after the 1999 model year, leaving the sedan and wagon variants until 2002, when Daewoo pulled out of the US market.
1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT (facelift) The 3000GT got a facelift for its last model year sold in the US. It received new headlights, front bumper, among other changes. The top of the line VR4 also got a distinct rear spoiler coined the “combat wing.”
1999 Subaru Legacy Outback SUS The only year for the 2nd generation Subaru Legacy to be offered in the Sport Utility Sedan (SUS) variant. Though some 1998 models were made as a limited run to test the waters. For 2000, a new generation of Legacy and Outback was released, which also brought a new SUS variant. However, it would be rebranded to the “Outback Sedan”.
2002 Ford Explorer 5-speed The only year the manual transmission was offered on the 3rd generation Explorer, only available on the base XLS trim level.
2002 Lincoln Blackwood The first attempt at a luxury pickup truck was a failed attempt. Production started in August of 2001 and was only sold in the US for the 2002 model year (though it was also sold for the 2003 model year in Mexico). Only available in RWD configuration, and very few options, the Lincoln Blackwood missed sales projections majorly. The bed was also not a standard truck bed, but it had a tonneau cover and a barn-style tailgate, as well as it being carpeted. This severely limited the blackwood's versatility, and it also being priced at a MSRP at $52500, caused it to be a massive flop in the marketplace. A total of 3356 blackwoods were ever made in the 15 months of production.
2003 Ford Escort ZX2 (facelift) After the Ford Escort Wagon and the Ford Escort sedan were discontinued for the 2000 model year and the 2002 model year, respectively, it left the Coupe, known as the ZX2 as the last one standing. In 2003, Acura added a 6-speed manual as an option for the Type S trim level. In addition there were several cosmetic differences on all 2003 models, notably being new headlights and the turn signal section of the taillights being made clear instead of red.
2003 Toyota Matrix XRS Automatic The Matrix XRS was the highest and hottest variant of the Matrix. The XRS would continue to be offered after 2003, but only with a 5-speed manual transmission. When the XRS was re-introduced in 2009 in the 2nd generation Toyota Matrix, it could once again be had with an optional automatic.

For its first model year, it had the LS1 from the Chevrolet Corvette, which was a 5.7L LS1 V8 producing 350 horsepower, but for 2005-2006 (the final model year), GM replaced the LS1 with the LS2 in the GTO. The LS2 made 50 more horsepower, and displacement was bumped up to 6L.
2005 & 2006 Honda Accord V6 Hybrid (pre-facelift/facelift) The V6 Hybrid drivetrain was offered from 2005-2006 in the seventh-generation Accord, 2005 in the pre-facelift and 2006 in the facelift variant.

In 2006, the Saab 9-2x had increased power outputs from the 2.5L I4 as well as the 2.0L I4 turbo in the Aero being replaced with a 2.5L turbocharged I4, which makes the 2.0L as well as the 2.5L turbocharged engines both one year options for the Saab 9-2x.
2008 Dodge Magnum (facelift) For 2008, the Magnum received a facelift with a more squared off look in addition to an update to the interior. In addition, SRT8 models received a hood scoop. The Magnum along with several other Chrysler products were canceled as part of Chrysler's restructuring plans.
2008 Ford E-Series (Econoline), facelift, old interior The E-Series received a facelift for the 2008 model year, however, the interior remained carryover from the previous model. For 2009, Ford updated the interior on the E-Series.
2009 Chevrolet HHR SS Panel The Chevrolet HHR started life off in 2005 as a retro styled car meant to rival the Chrysler PT Cruiser. An SS version would come along for the 2008 model year. However, for the 2009 model year, Chevrolet would combine the performance SS model with the panel van. However, due to GM's bankruptcy, 2009 would be the HHR Panel SS' one and only model year with only a few hundred ever made.
2009 Chrysler Aspen & Dodge Durango Hybrid Production began on August 22nd, 2008, on October 23rd, Chrysler announced they were closing the plant where they were built. Around 400 hybrids were made, the exact number made is unknown, with the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid being the rarer variant with around 150 made. The Chrysler Aspen lineup was also discontinued, but the Dodge Durango lineup continued on, abeit without the hybrid option for the rest of the generation, eventually getting a new generation in 2011.
2009 Kia Borrego The Kia Borrego was a body on frame SUV which launched in late 2008, right in the recession in the US. Offered with either a 3.8L V6 or a 4.6L V8. Due to disappointing sales, the Kia Borrego did not return for the 2010 model year (although it continued to be sold up until the 2012 model year in Canada), it was replaced by the redesigned Kia Sorento, although it was smaller and unibody, which began production in 2010.
2009 Mitsubishi Galant 3.8 V6 (facelift) The Galant was facelifted for the 2009 model year for a 2nd time since the generation's debut in 2004. The 3.8L V6 featured in the Sport V6 and Ralliart trim levels would be dropped the following year in 2010.
2009 Pontiac G3 Only sold for the 2009 model year, the G3 was a rebadged version of the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback. All models except for the G6 would be discontinued for 2010, the same year that Pontiac ceased to exist as a brand.
2009.5 Pontiac G6 Coupe and Convertible (facelift) A minor facelift to the G6 arrived for the 2009.5 model year, the Coupe and Convertible versions were both discontinued for 2010, making the 2009.5 facelift very rare for coupes and convertibles.

2010 Ford Mustang (4.0L V6, 4.6L V8) When the 5th generation Mustang received a pretty big mid cycle refresh from the 2010 model year, the available engines were a carryover from the pre-facelift Mustangs. But in 2011, Ford replaced both the engines, with a 3.7L V6 now being the base engine, as well as the introduction of the Coyote 5.0L V8. The new 5.0L V8 made 97 more horsepower than the 4.6L V8 it replaced, and the 3.7L V6 made 95 more horsepower than the 4.0L V6 it replaced. Nevertheless, this made the 2010 Mustang an oddball year as it had the new facelift body, but with the carryover engines.
2010 Hyundai Accent & Elantra Blue The “Blue” trim level was introduced on the 2010 Hyundai Accent and Elantra as a base trim level aimed at fuel efficiency. Both cars were only available with a 5-speed high efficiency manual in the Blue trim. In addition, both cars received a “Blue” styled badge in the rear. The Blue trim was dropped in 2011 on both cars.
2010 Toyota 4Runner 2.7L When the 5th gen Toyota 4Runner debuted in 2009 for the 2010 model year, there were two engine options, a 2.7L I4 and a 4.0L V6. The 2.7L I4 was borrowed from the Tacoma and produced 113 less HP than the 4.0L V6. Paired with a 4-speed automatic fuel economy were very similar to the 4.0L (which was paired with a 5-speed automatic). Only offered on the base SR5 4x2 trim level, the 2.7L 4Runner is an extremely rare option which seems to only appear in writing.
2010 Volvo V50 6-speed (facelift) Though available with a manual transmission from 2006-2007, the V50 was facelifted in 2008 and for 2010, Volvo briefly brought back the manual transmission (6 speed) on the T5 AWD variants. For 2011, AWD, the manual, and the N/A 5 cylinder were all dropped from the US market, 2011 would also be the last year for the V50 in the United States and Canada.

The company would file for bankruptcy in November of 2013, after furloughing its workers in the United States in March of that year. Around 1600 were sold in the United States. However, the car would come back to life as the Karma Revero for the 2017 model year under a different company who had purchased the assets from Fisker's bankruptcy auction.
2012 Honda Civic (9th gen, pre-facelift) When the ninth-generation Civic was released in 2012, reviews of the new Civic were mediocre, citing the cheap interior and the worsened driving dynamics. As a result Honda gave the Civic an emergency refresh for the 2013 model year which featured different styling as well as improved interior quality, and changed the driving dynamics, among other updates. 2012 also was also the last year of the base DX trim level, and the only year the DX was offered on the ninth-generation Civic. The DX was even less equipped than the previous eighth-generation DX, as it lacked a standard radio as well as air conditioning, being the most notable differences.
2013 Chevrolet Spark 4-speed automatic When the Spark was launched for the 2013 model year, it was offered with a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic. For 2014, the 4-speed automatic was replaced by a continuously variable transmission.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Plug-in
2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid Powered by a 2.5L supercharged 4 cylinder paired with a hybrid system, the Pathfinder Hybrid was met with poor sales which led to its discontinuation after a single model year in the United States. 2016 Scion iM Introduced along with the iA for the 2016 model year, the iM was mainly known as the Toyota Auris in international markets. With the discontinuation of the Scion brand for the 2017 model year, the iM would be rebranded as the Toyota Corolla iM.

2018 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Hatchback 6MT General Motors introduced a new 1.6L diesel to the Cruze lineup for the 2017 model year. Unlike the 2.0L turbodiesel which was found in the 2014 Cruze TD (also a one year car), the 1.6L was available with a manual transmission. But, for the 2017 model year, the diesel was limited to the sedan variant only. For 2018, General Motors added availability of the diesel to the hatchback variant of the Cruze. In 2019, for the Cruze's final model year, General Motors discontinued the manual transmission for all variants of the Cruze (though the diesel remained). 2019 Ford Fiesta ST-line With the Fiesta's death in the US on the horizon. Ford decided it would sell an appearance package for the Fiesta SE, which made it look like the high performance ST, with some cosmetic changes. A 5-speed manual was standard, with a 6 speed DCT being an option.
2019 Hyundai Elantra SE 6-speed (facelift) The only model year you could get the facelift sixth-generation Elantra with a manual transmission on the base SE trim level. However, the manual would return in 2021 in the seventh-generation in the “N-Line” trim level, and in 2022 on the “N” model.
2019 Mazda CX5 Signature Skyactiv-D After years of delays and almost a decade after Mazda announced they were going to sell a diesel engine in the US, Mazda finally introduced the 2.2L Skyactiv-D engine for the US market. But it was too late, as passenger car diesel demand had dried up after the Volkswagen TDI emissions scandal. The car skipped the 2020 model year, due to emissions certification issues. But the diesel was not coming back, Mazda confirmed in January 2021 that the Mazda CX5 diesel as well as plans for a Mazda6 diesel were dropped, due to low customer demand. The diesel was only offered in the top end 'Signature' trim, and was an expensive upgrade.
2019 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen 1.4T For the 2019 model year, the front wheel drive versions of the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen received a new 1.4L I4 turbo which could be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 8-speed automatic. The all wheel drive version of the Golf Sportwagen however, retained the old 1.8L I4 turbo, with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual clutch as it had offered previously. The Sportwagen and Alltrack versions of the Volkswagen Golf were discontinued for the 2020 model year.
2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL 6MT For the 2019 model year, Volkswagen added the option of a manual transmission on the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack on the top spec SEL trim level. The Sportwagen and Alltrack versions of the Volkswagen Golf were discontinued for the 2020 model year.

2020 Kia Cadenza (facelift) The slow-selling Kia Cadenza (as well as its bigger, even slower selling sibling, the K900) were discontinued in the US for 2021. Though the new generation of the K900 (K9 in some markets) was able to be sold for two model years (2019 and 2020), the Cadenza had just been facelifted for 2020, with more standard features, updated styling and a standard 12.3 inch touchscreen. This was a car which few people knew existed, and even fewer bought. The reason for the discontinuation of the Cadenza and its sibling the K900 was due to the rapidly shrinking market for large sedans and the introduction of the Genesis brand from Hyundai in 2017. In 2020, Kia managed to only sell 1,265 Cadenzas, and 305 K900s.
2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback (Mazda2 based) The rebadged Mazda2 sedan was originally sold in the US as the Scion iA (later the Toyota Yaris iA), but after the (Toyota designed and built) Yaris was discontinued in the USA for 2019. The Mazda2 based Yaris iA, became known as the Yaris. For the 2020 MY, they introduced the Yaris Hatchback, which was a rebadged Mazda2 hatch which we previously did not get. But, the Yaris line (really more like the Mazda2 line) was discontinued after 2020 due to slowing sales of the compact car segment.
2021 Ford F-150 Powerstroke 3.0 V6 Diesel (14th generation) The 3.0 V6 powerstroke diesel was introduced on the F-150 for the 2018 model year. However, the 2.5L got a modest power bump from 170 hp to 181 hp compared to the previous generation. For the 2022 model year, Nissan decided to replace the 2.5L I4 with a new 1.5L turbocharged I3. The new engine had more power (now 201 hp) while also returning better fuel economy than the previous 2.5L. In addition, Nissan also updated the CVT transmission which featured a wider gear ratio coverage, among other updates. But aside from the powertrain upgrade, the Rogue carried on unchanged.
2022 Jeep Compass 2.4L Tigershark (facelift) The Jeep Compass received a minor facelift and an updated interior for the 2022 model year. For the 2023 model year, the 2.4L Tigershark was dropped in favor for a 2.0L turbo which is also shared with the Dodge Hornet. In addition, the front wheel drive model was also dropped for the 2023 model year.

2010 Hyundai Elantra (4th generation) w/Navigation Midway through the 2010 Elantra's model run, Hyundai introduced an in-dash navigation system. Offered on GLS and SE trim levels, this navigation system is quite uncommon due to its hefty price tag of $1100 dollars on GLS, and $2000 dollars on SE (required a premium package which included more features). A new Elantra would arrive for the 2011 model year.
2015 Mercedes-Benz ML 250 BLUETEC The 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML received a new diesel engine for the 2015 model year, a 2.1L I4 turbo diesel which replaced the old 3.0L V6 turbo diesel. This caused Mercedes to rename the diesel option from the 350 BLUETEC to the 250 BLUETEC.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d When the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (ML) became the GLE for the 2016 model year, the branding of the diesel was changed from the ML 250 BLUETEC to the GLE 300d (though the engine remained the same, 2.1L I4 turbo diesel). For 2017, Mercedes-Benz called quits on diesels in North America. This makes 2016 the only model year the 2.1L turbo diesel was badged as the GLE nameplate.
2019 Ford Escape (3rd generation) /All-red Taillights For the 3rd generation Ford Escape's final model year, the taillights were made all red, except for the reverse light. In addition, the turn signal was combined with the tail light.

However, for 2020, Subaru restricted the interior color to black only for the crimson red pearl exterior.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE w/E-ABC The E-ABC system or E-Active Body Control allowed the GLE to bounce using hydraulic suspension. It also allowed the vehicle to keep itself flat when cornering as well as off-set weight distribution. E-ABC was dropped due to low take rates, though it is still offered on the larger GLS-580 and standard on the GLS-600 Maybach, E-ABC was a very expensive option, at $8,200, it just was a lot more than the $1,710 dollar Airmatic suspension, which did most of the things E-ABC did, but was much cheaper. Due to dealers not ordering the option as well as low to no demand.
2022 Fiat 500X w/Al Fresco Top For the 2022 model year, Fiat introduced a cloth top to the 500X, available as a $1000 dollar option on all trim levels in black, grey, and red (except on the Yacht Club Capri). This top is similar to the “Sky One-Touch Power Top'' found on Jeep Wranglers as well as the “Sky Slider” found on older Jeep Libertys. A special trim called the Yacht Club Capri was also introduced with an exclusive standard blue top and blue paint with an ivory interior. For 2023, Fiat would cut back on the trims and options which were found on the 500X, which makes sense considering how poorly it had been selling. This unfortunately would also mark the end of the al fresco top option in the US. With only 463 units 500X being sold in 2022, this option is very rare.
2022 Ford Maverick XL without cruise control When the Ford Maverick was introduced for the 2022 model year, the base XL model lacked standard cruise control, even as an option. But for 2023, Ford made cruise control standard on all Mavericks.
2022 Mazda MX30 Soul Red Metallic Soul red metallic, Mazda's signature color was not offered for 2023. The MX30 would be discontinued after 2023 in California (where it was only sold), although sales continued in Canada.
